Trying to figure out where to take your engagement photos in San Antonio? Well, McNay Art Museum engagement photos deserve to be at the top of that list.
I have photographed couples all over San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country for years. And still, the McNay never gets old for me. It is elegant without being stuffy, romantic without being overdone, and full of variety all in one location.
So let me walk you through everything you need to know before booking your McNay Art Museum engagement photos.

First, a little background on the location. The McNay Art Museum sits on a gorgeous 23-acre estate in the Alamo Heights area of San Antonio. The building is a stunning Spanish Colonial Revival mansion. In addition, it is surrounded by manicured gardens, reflecting pools, and towering trees. It honestly feels like Southern Europe, which is not something you say about many places in Texas.
As a San Antonio engagement photographer, I love how many different backdrops you can get without driving across town. In one session, for example, we can capture airy garden shots, architectural editorial looks, and soft romantic moments. As a result, your gallery stays interesting and full of variety.
Furthermore, the McNay photographs well year-round. The gardens are lush and green in spring and summer. Meanwhile, fall and winter bring warm golden tones that are just dreamy. San Antonio does not get dramatic fall foliage, but the McNay still shifts beautifully with the seasons.
Finally, the McNay attracts a relaxed, artsy crowd. If you value design, culture, and aesthetics, you will feel right at home here. That ease always shows up in the photos.

Here are my go-to spots when I shoot McNay Art Museum engagement photos:
The Courtyard and Reflecting Pool This is the most iconic spot at the McNay. The arched walkways and pool reflection create a symmetrical, painterly backdrop. Late afternoon light hits the stone walls beautifully. I almost always start sessions here. It helps couples ease into being in front of the camera.
The Gardens and Grounds The sprawling gardens are full of character. Winding paths, mature oak trees, and manicured hedges make for layered, lush backgrounds. Garden path walking shots feel natural and unposed. The depth from the greenery is just beautiful.
The Exterior Architecture The Spanish Colonial facade is stunning for editorial-style shots. The warm terracotta tones and clean architectural lines photograph really well in golden hour light. These shots have a timeless, almost European feel that couples love.
Shaded Garden Alcoves Tucked-away spots with benches, sculptures, and overhanging trees are scattered throughout the grounds. These are my favorite places for quiet, intimate moments between couples. The dappled light through the trees is soft and flattering.
Near the Muriel Tobin Collection Garden This area has a more structured, formal feel. Beautiful plantings and architectural details make for gorgeous editorial shots. It is less trafficked than the main courtyard, which I always appreciate.

I am a golden hour photographer through and through. The McNay is stunning during that last hour before sunset. Warm light bounces off the stone walls. Shadows get long and dramatic in the gardens. If you can swing an evening session, I always recommend it.
Golden hour does not work for everyone. If you need to wrap up earlier, aim for 8 to 10 a.m. The light is still soft and directional. The museum is also quieter with fewer visitors around.
Midday sessions (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) are the most challenging. The sun is high and creates unflattering shadows. That said, the shaded spots and covered walkways at the McNay help. It is workable if that is your only option.
The McNay grounds are open to the public, so weekends can get busy. For a more private feel in your McNay Art Museum engagement photos, try a weekday or early morning weekend slot.

The McNay has an elevated, artistic vibe. Outfits that match that energy photograph the most beautifully here.
Flowy, romantic dresses in warm neutrals, blush, sage, or terracotta look wonderful against the stone and greenery. Think flowing silhouettes. The gardens call for movement.
Linen or textured fabrics feel elevated but relaxed. That fits the McNay perfectly. For guys, a linen shirt in a neutral or earthy tone with well-fitted pants is always a great call.
Bold jewel tones like deep burgundy, olive, or navy look stunning against the warm sandy tones of the Spanish Colonial exterior. Great choice if you want more color and drama.
Avoid bright whites or neon colors. They compete with the architecture. Soft ivory or cream is fine and often very flattering.
For coordinating outfits, skip the matchy-matchy look. Stick to a shared color palette instead. It looks much more natural in photos.

Here are a few things I always share before we shoot at the McNay:
First, check the museum schedule before you book. The McNay hosts events and outdoor exhibitions throughout the year. As a result, some days the grounds are busier or certain areas may be closed. So check their calendar before confirming your date.
Next, arrive a few minutes early. Parking at the McNay is free but can fill up. Arriving 10 to 15 minutes early gives you time to settle in and get comfortable before we start.
Also, bring snacks and water. San Antonio heat is no joke, especially in summer. Staying hydrated keeps your energy up and your smiles genuine.
Additionally, trust the process with posing. Feeling awkward in front of the camera is completely normal. I start with simple walking shots so you can focus on each other. By the end, most couples forget I am even there.
Furthermore, think about how you will use the photos. Planning a wedding website, save-the-dates, or a large canvas print? Let me know ahead of time so I can plan shots that work for those specific uses.
Finally, have fun with it. Your engagement session is a chance to celebrate before the wedding day craziness begins. The more present and connected you are with each other, the more beautiful your photos will be.
