One of my absolute favorite types of weddings to capture is the intimate, relaxed beauty of a backyard wedding just like this Austin Elopement I recently had the honor to photograph. There’s something so uniquely charming and personal about transforming a familiar space into the perfect setting for your big day. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful backyard wedding in Austin, and I’m excited to share some inspiration and advice for couples considering this more personal, intimate option for their wedding.
Backyard weddings have grown in popularity, and for good reason. They offer an incredible amount of freedom and customization that traditional venues simply can’t match. Here are just a few reasons why I recommend considering a backyard wedding:
1. Personal Touch: When you host your wedding in a backyard—whether it’s your own, a family member’s, or a friend’s—you’re choosing a place that’s already filled with memories. It’s a venue that’s meaningful and unique to you as a couple, and that shows through in every moment captured.
2. Budget-Friendly: While renting a traditional wedding venue can be one of the most expensive aspects of a wedding, a backyard wedding offers the flexibility to save money on the venue and allocate it towards other areas, like photography, florals, or catering.
3. Intimate Vibe: Backyard weddings lend themselves to smaller guest lists, which creates a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Whether you have a few close friends or just your immediate family, the setting feels personal and allows you to spend quality time with everyone.
4. Creative Freedom: You can design your backyard wedding exactly as you envision it, from the ceremony setup to the décor and lighting. There are no restrictions on what you can do, so your wedding truly reflects your personality and style.
The wedding I recently photographed in Austin was a perfect example of how magical backyard weddings can be. To hide my couple’s true identity for their own privacy i’ll call them, Emily and Jack. Emily and Jack wanted an intimate, stress-free day with their closest family and friends. They transformed Jack’s aunt’s home into a beautiful wedding venue that felt both personal and elegant.
They chose to get married under a DIY arch in the backyard, which was decorated with soft, flowing fabric draped across the top with an elegant touch of greenery and floral decor adding a pop of color.
The simplicity of the natural setting, combined with their thoughtful details, made for an unforgettable atmosphere. As their photographer, I was able to capture the essence of their relationship in this personal space, making the photos feel even more meaningful.
If you’re considering a backyard wedding in Austin (or anywhere), here are some tips to help you create a beautiful and seamless experience:
Austin is known for its beautiful landscapes, and many backyards in the area have mature trees, lush gardens, or unique features that make them ideal for a wedding. Whether you have towering oaks or a charming garden nook, use the natural beauty of your space as the foundation for your décor.
For Emily and Jack’s wedding, the backyard’s scenic view became the centerpiece of their setup. They enhanced the backyard’s beauty by with elegant table setups and floral arrangements at each table. creating a stunning wedding venue that felt effortless yet elegant.
One of the biggest advantages of a backyard wedding is that you can control the ambiance, and lighting plays a huge role in this. Twinkling string lights, lanterns, and candles can transform any outdoor space into a romantic, magical setting—especially for an evening ceremony or reception.
For the Austin wedding, we planned much of the photography around the soft, golden light of the late afternoon. As the sun set and candles on the tables added a dreamy glow that made the evening feel even more special.
Austin’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan. For outdoor weddings, especially in backyards, a tent is a great investment. Not only does it provide shade or shelter from rain, but it can also add a sense of structure to your outdoor space.
At Emily and Jack’s wedding, thankfully it did not rain, but the Texas heat was definitely felt. Thankfully they had multiple outdoor fans setup and handheld fan for the guests to take.
One of the best things about a backyard wedding is that you can create little pockets of intimacy throughout the space. Whether it’s a cozy seating area with blankets and pillows or a fire pit for guests to gather around, these small touches help create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
For Emily and Jack’s reception, they set up a lounge area with vintage furniture and string lights, creating a space where guests could relax and chat under the stars. It was the perfect way to make the evening feel comfortable and intimate, while still being elegant.
As a photographer, one of my top priorities is to capture the authenticity and emotion of each wedding, especially intimate backyard ceremonies where every detail is so personal. For backyard weddings, the pace is often more relaxed than at a traditional venue, which allows for more candid, natural moments.
I spent the day capturing the quiet, joyful moments between Emily and Jack—like their first look as she walks up the garden “aisle”, the laughter the ring bearer run back in the house to grab the rings for the ring exchange, and the loving glances as they exchange their vows. These are the moments that make a backyard wedding so special, and they’re the memories you’ll want to hold onto forever.
Backyard weddings are some of my favorite events to photograph because they’re always so unique to the couple. No two backyard weddings are alike—each one reflects the personalities, love, and style of the couple in a way that larger, more traditional venues sometimes can’t capture. There’s a level of comfort and ease that comes with hosting a wedding in a familiar, personal space, and that shines through in the photos.
Meanwhile, if you’re planning your perfect backyard wedding in Austin, I’d love to help you capture your day in a way that’s true to you. As an elopement photographer in San Antonio who specializes in intimate weddings, my goal is always to tell your story in the most beautiful and authentic way possible. Whether you’re eloping under a grand oak tree or sharing your vows in your family’s garden, your backyard wedding can be as magical as any grand affair—if not more so.
A backyard wedding is the perfect blend of intimacy, personality, and beauty. With the right planning and personal touches, you can turn your outdoor space into the wedding venue of your dreams. And when it comes to capturing those special moments, choosing a photographer who understands the significance of every detail can make all the difference.
