One of the most common questions I get asked during my discovery calls is…

How do you handle low-light scenarios, such as dark church ceremonies or dimly lit reception spaces? 

When evaluating a space, I ask myself:

• Is the ambient light sufficient, or will adding light preserve the intended mood?
• Does this match the vision designed by the couple and their planner?
• Will flash overpower the venue’s natural ambiance?
• Would a continuous light enhance the romance, or would it be visually distracting?

Because every space is unique, I make these decisions on-location and always come prepared with multiple lighting setups for any scenario. I’d love to share a few examples showing how flash, continuous light, and ambient light each look on a real wedding day.

Flash

I typically use flash on the dance floor, for editorial portraits, or when the reception space needs extra light for formal dances. It’s also my go-to choice when I want to separate my couples from the background by darkening the surroundings and bringing full focus onto them.

Continuous Light

This has become a staple in my work recently because it illuminates spaces with a natural, soft look while ensuring couples are consistently lit. For low-light situations, I often pair a continuous light with a flash on opposite sides of the room, allowing me to shoot with a flash on one camera body and continuous/ambient light on the other. It’s also my preferred setup when shooting film in dark environments. In my experience, continuous light offers unbeatable reliability and predictability.

Ambient Light

When couples and designers prioritize atmospheric lighting to set the mood, ambient light is an easy choice. Omitting artificial gear keeps the background free of distracting elements and preserves the venue’s natural character. While relying on available light seems simple, it requires a sharp eye for positioning, knowing exactly where to stand in relation to the subject so the natural light catches them at its absolute best.

Church Ceremonies

Finally, church ceremonies can be tricky because venue rules often prohibit flash or auxiliary lighting. This is where gear selection becomes critical. I rely on high-performing cameras and lenses that excel in low-light environments.
